penland winter printmaking residency
(2009)
In January 2009, I completed a four-week printmaking residency at Penland School of Craft. My proposed project was to create a series of kites based on traditional Japanese forms. With the help of Master Printer, David Wolfe, I designed and constructed 10 Rokkaku kites, each built with hand-whittled bamboo frames and printed with a suite of etchings and lithographs representing brightly colored tree graphs and nebulae-ic shapes.
My inspiration for this project was the idea that the kite represents both a struggle and dependence. It is an object that is tethered to a person and is carefully maintained by the clash of movements between the person and the wind.
